This document explains how the Chrome extension Focus Reader (“the Extension”) handles personal data and uses page content.
1) What the Extension does
- Helps you read web documents step by step in paragraph/section units.
- Optionally provides an AI Reading Guide under certain conditions.
2) Data sent for the Page Reading Guide (when/what)
The Extension sends an AI request only when the optional Page Reading Guide (AI summary) feature is enabled and the current page has sufficient extracted main text (e.g., approximately 2,000+ characters).
The scope of data sent is:
-
Extracted page text (partial): the minimum main text needed to generate the summary, with limits applied
- Page Reading Guide (AI summary): up to about 10,000 characters (excess is truncated)
- Language info: browser language code and display language name (e.g.,
ko-KR,한국어)
3) Where data goes (recipients)
The Page Reading Guide (AI summary) is processed through the following path:
- The Extension → our API (e.g., Vercel Serverless Function) → Anthropic (Claude) → our API → the Extension
4) Storage/retention (how long)
-
AI requests/responses may be temporarily kept in memory (in-memory) only during the current page session. They are no longer retained when you:
- refresh the page,
- leave the page, or
- disable the extension.
- The Extension does not permanently store AI responses (disk/cloud).
5) What we do not collect
- The Extension does not request your name, email, or account information.
- The Extension does not “always/send everything” from a page. Only limited extracted text needed for the enabled feature is sent under the conditions described above.
6) User choices (controls)
You can turn off the following in settings:
- Page Reading Guide (AI summary)
